When Ian Gowland of Big Blue Interior Design was asked to recommend and specify floor coverings for the new look Life Café at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle, he knew from past experience that Marmoleum Modular ticked all the boxes for this busy facility at the heart of the pioneering science village.
“The centre attracts around 250,000 people annually, and the café is particularly popular,” he said, “so it needed a floor covering that would stand the test of time in terms of durability and aesthetics. I told my client about the many benefits of Marmoleum Modular, including how it’s designed to cope with heavy footfall and the availability of a variety of colours, patterns and formats – which meant that we could create any type of design – and they were very happy with the option.”
Ian specified Marmoleum Modular planks in a 100 x 25cm format for the café, choosing trace of nature, rocky ice and Cliffs of Moher colourways and a random installation pattern. “They’ve helped to create a calming, yet contemporary atmosphere,” said Ian, “and it’s a massive improvement on the previous look.”
Sam Watson, Director of Durham Flooring who completed the installation, agreed: “The design looks sleek, modern and streamlined and it gives the Life Café a modern lift,” he said. “The natural colours complement each other and the new furnishings really well, giving it a great ambience.”
The Centre for Life will also benefit from the hygienic attributes of its new floor coverings. Marmoleum has earned the Allergy UK ‘Seal of Approval’ as, with the correct cleaning regime, it will not harbour allergens or dust mites, making it an ideal solution for busy educational establishments and visitor attractions.
