Selectaglaze launches secondary glazing BIM models & Product Guide ..

Secondary Glazing

If you would like to enhance the thermal, acoustic or security performance of existing primary windows in a Listed property or in a conservation area, then secondary glazing is often the only answer. However; with an increase in developments on brownfield sites, we are seeing a rise in the use of secondary glazing to support the primary windows, to help achieve the acoustic requirements, in these extremely noisy areas.

Selectaglaze secondary glazing is an independent window fitted to the room side of an existing opening and used to control the internal environment of a building. Often primary windows cannot be replaced due to budgetary, lease or planning constraints, therefore secondary glazing offers a personalised and cost effective solution. Units can be neatly incorporated into a building swiftly and unobtrusively, so it doesn’t disrupt normal operations. It is also a reversible adaptation; perfect for Listed buildings and new builds.

A sound reduction of 45dB is readily attainable with secondary glazing and substantiated with acoustic reports. Outstanding performances of up to 55dB are possible, when specialist acoustic glass is used.

Secondary glazing limits heat loss by nearly 50% as it traps an insulating layer between the primary and secondary windows. Using specialist thermal units and glass such as Spacia or the Selectaglaze enhanced thermal casements, very low U-values can be reached which are vital when attaining high levels of BREEAM ratings and Passivhaus/EnerPHit standards. A recent example is a project completed in John Street, London.

From a security perspective, secondary glazing is an effective second barrier to entry, plus a range of fully tested security products to protect against physical and ballistic attack, as well as blast mitigation.

Selectaglaze has just launched a broad range of BIM models, which will appeal to those Architects and end users whose projects are designed with component and layered objects. These can be downloaded from the RIBA National BIM Library.

Spotlight, the Selectaglaze blog has recently been approved by RIBA as CPD material. Through reading the following categories, specifiers can gain valuable CPD points towards their annual total:

  • The Built Environment
  • Treat of the Month
  • Secondary Glazing in Practice

There are 3 additional CPDs which are offered to architects:

If you wish to book any of the CPDs please email to arrange a suitable time and date.  Founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in secondary glazing.
